How to Play Tennis

Quick start

Use SELECT to choose SINGLES or DOUBLES, then press START. Set the computer’s level from 1 to 5 with left/right and press START again; begin at level 1. For doubles, use controllers 1 and 2 as partners against the computer. When serving, wait for the automatic toss and press A as the ball drops. Move to meet returns, use A for a stroke and B for a lob. Let an opponent’s serve bounce before returning it.

Controls

Directional pad: move; up approaches the net, down moves away, left/right move sideways. Left/right also select the opponent level before play. A: swing and serve. B: lob. SELECT: choose singles/doubles at the title; inactive during play. START: advance from mode choice, start after level selection, pause/resume a match.

Tennis — About this game

Nintendo’s Tennis turns a match into a contest of positioning and timing. Move around the near side of the court, meet the ball with a normal stroke or lift a lob over the other side, and adjust your serve timing as the tossed ball falls. Five computer skill levels let you start gently and increase the challenge. Singles is one player against the computer; doubles puts two human players on the same team against a computer pair, rather than against each other. A match is best of three sets, so winning two sets secures the result. The inner sidelines apply in singles and the outer sidelines in doubles. Choosing when to approach the net, recover your position and change the height of your return gives this straightforward NES game its tactical rhythm.
