How to Play The Addams Family

Quick start

Press START to begin. From the large tree left of the house, head right toward the cemetery. The mansion is locked, so explore the crypt beneath the tombstone farthest to the right, defeat the skeleton by bouncing on its head and collect the front-door key. Use B at entrances to enter or leave rooms, then return to the mansion. Collect cash and food along the way. Press START to pause and inspect your inventory, then START again to continue. SELECT calls Thing only after you rescue him.

Controls

Directional pad: move; down also crouches. A: jump, or swim when in the water. B: enter/exit rooms; press repeatedly to paddle the gondola on the secret river. SELECT: activate Thing’s temporary protection after rescuing him; uses are limited. START: begin, or pause and display the inventory; press again to resume. Defeat suitable enemies by jumping on them rather than treating B as a weapon button.

The Addams Family — About this game

The NES version of The Addams Family combines platforming with an exploration-and-item quest. Gomez arrives to find his relatives missing after the family’s dispute with the fortune-seeking lawyer Tully Alford. Starting outside the locked mansion, you must search its grounds, obtain keys and uncover routes through its rooms. Rescuing the family is only part of the task: you also need to collect one million dollars to complete Morticia’s rescue. Money and useful objects are scattered around the house, while food restores energy lost to enemies and traps. Jumping on certain enemies can defeat them and provide a higher bounce. Once rescued, Thing offers a limited protective shield, so saving his help for dangerous rooms matters. The challenge is to connect clues and objects across the mansion, not simply race through a series of exits.
