How to Play Hunt for Red October, The
Quick start
Press START and immediately learn the two firing arcs: A launches horizontal torpedoes and B launches vertical missiles. Move carefully through the harbour, keeping clear of terrain and sonar coverage while collecting POWER and armour whenever available. Torpedo and missile pickups replenish ammunition; “UP” versions improve range and eventually add homing. Tap SELECT when you must pass a dangerous sonar or vessel, then turn the caterpillar drive off again to conserve its limited power. Save A+B electronic countermeasures for dense incoming fire because their supply is limited. Watch the weapon and power meters—missiles can run out completely, while empty base torpedoes continue only at a much slower firing rate.
Controls
D-pad Up: rise toward the surface. Down: dive. Right: move forward. Left: reverse. A: fire torpedoes horizontally. B: fire missiles vertically. SELECT: activate or deactivate the caterpillar drive, temporarily hiding Red October from sonar while consuming power. A+B together: release a limited electronic countermeasure decoy that attracts and destroys nearby enemy weapons. START: begin or pause the game.
Hunt for Red October, The — About this game
The Hunt for Red October is a side-view NES submarine action game that casts the player as Captain Marko Ramius during his attempted defection. The Red October must escape a guarded Soviet harbour, cross oceans, coral reefs, caverns and deep trenches, and reach the safety of the United States while the Red Fleet closes in. Torpedoes attack horizontally, missiles attack vertically, and limited electronic countermeasures destroy nearby hostile fire. Weapon pickups add ammunition or extend range and homing capability, while armour and power pickups keep the submarine alive. The experimental caterpillar drive provides temporary sonar invisibility at a heavy energy cost.
