How to Play The Last Ninja

Quick start

Press START at the title to open the options, then START again on the new-game option. You begin at the Central Park bandstand. Practise movement before approaching hazards: up moves toward the upper left of the screen, not straight upward. Stand over an object and press B to collect it. Hold SELECT and press A to cycle held objects, or SELECT+B to choose weapons. Use B in the appropriate spot to apply an object. A punches or uses your selected weapon while stationary; A while moving vaults forward. Explore for the items needed to open the next route.

Controls

Directional pad: up moves upper-left, down lower-right, right upper-right, left lower-left; the matching diagonal input also works. A while moving: forward vault. A while stationary: punch or attack with the selected weapon, including throwing a selected star. B: kick, pick up an object when standing over it, or use the held object at the correct location. SELECT+A: cycle held objects. SELECT+B: cycle weapons. START: start through the title options or pause play.

The Last Ninja — About this game

The Last Ninja on NES is an isometric action adventure set in modern New York. Armakuni has been pulled out of his own time and must find the evil shogun Kunitoki across six stages. Combat is only part of the journey: screens contain weapons, keys and other objects whose purpose may become clear somewhere else. The distinction between the selected weapon and the held object matters, because one is used for attacks while the other solves environmental obstacles. Movement follows the diagonal layout of the scenery, and jumping while moving commits Armakuni to a forward vault. Precise positioning is also needed to pick up or use objects. Progress comes from observing each screen, remembering what you found and returning with the appropriate item, rather than treating every encounter as a fast side-scrolling fight.
