How to Play Simpsons, The: Bart vs. The Space Mutants
Quick start
Press START and check the status display for the current goal. Move with the D-pad, hold A while moving to run, and hold A during a jump for extra height. For the longest jump, press A just before B; if Bart is carrying a weapon, that order avoids wasting a shot. B fires the selected weapon or spray paint. Use SELECT to cycle the inventory, or hold Down and press SELECT to cycle backward, then press START to use the chosen item. On the first stage, use the X-ray glasses to identify possessed people and spray, hide or transform the required purple objects. Jump on mutants and grab their evidence before it disappears; spell the shown Simpson’s name to earn help against the boss.
Controls
D-pad Left/Right: move; Up: enter shops or elevators; Down: exit them. A: jump; hold for a higher jump, or hold while moving to run. A then B together: super-long jump. B: fire the current weapon or spray paint; operate keypads and elevators. SELECT: cycle inventory; Down+SELECT cycles backward. START: begin, use the selected inventory item, or activate/resume the inventory “Pause” item.

The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is a five-level NES platform adventure in which Bart alone can see the aliens hiding inside Springfield residents. In every stage, the Space Mutants seek a different class of ingredient for their ultimate weapon, so Bart must collect, conceal, destroy or alter enough of those objects before reaching the exit. The opening streets revolve around removing purple objects with spray paint and improvised tricks. X-ray glasses reveal possessed townspeople; jumping on a disguised mutant makes it drop proof, and collecting enough evidence spells a family member’s name so that relative can assist in the boss encounter. Weapons, coins and puzzle items are managed through Bart’s scrolling inventory.
