Choose a hero with Left/Right and press A. Go downstairs and talk to people with B; use Chitchat first, then ask about newly learned subjects because those conversations unlock later quests. Outside town, move with the D-pad and face enemies before pressing A, since the attack travels in the direction the hero is actually facing. Press B to open the command icons, move the cursor with the D-pad, confirm with A and back out with B. Use the closed hand to take nearby objects, the grasping hand to use keys or consumables, and the open hand to give a quest item to the correct person. Watch food in the inventory, buy supplies in inns, and use passwords from the title menu when returning.

D-pad during play: move in four directions; on menus, move the cursor or scroll lists. A during play: attack in the facing direction, automatically alternating available ranged and melee weapons. B during play: open the command icons. In the icon menu, A executes the selected command or advances messages, while B backs out or closes the menu. START: pause. SELECT: no in-game function. On the opening selection, Left/Right chooses Knight, Valkyrie or Barbarian and A confirms.
