From the main menu, use Up/Down and A to choose Story Mode, then create your skater and confirm the automatic save. Your first playable objective is the Midwest lesson: ride up to Tony Hawk, identified as a mission giver by the red circle beneath him, and press L to start his skate lessons. Copy the manoeuvres he demonstrates before moving on to the story's later city missions. In Story Mode, look for another red-circle character and press L whenever you need the next objective. For a separate score run, choose Classic Mode; each run gives you two minutes and ten goals such as score targets, S-K-A-T-E, C-O-M-B-O and the Secret Tape. The official GBA manual lists Story, Classic and Head-2-Head modes, not a separate Free Skate menu, so use the untimed space between Story missions to practise routes. Hold B longer before release for a higher ollie, and build the Special Meter with clean tricks before attempting a special input.

Menus: D-pad Up/Down moves the cursor, A accepts, and B goes back. Skating: D-pad Left/Right steers and Down brakes; hold B to crouch and release it to ollie. In the air, press L plus a direction for a flip trick or R plus a direction for a grab. Hold A near a rail, edge or lip to grind; press A plus a direction while riding straight up a lip for a lip trick. Up then Down / Down then Up starts a manual or nose manual; R as you land from vert performs a revert; L+R launches a spine transfer. On the ground, L enters nollie stance and R switches stance. Hold A in the air near a wall for a wallride, or jump towards a wall and press A for a wall plant. Mission characters with a red circle are addressed with L. Off board: hold Down until the skater steps off, hold A to run, steer with Left/Right, and press B to jump back onto the board. START pauses. Special tricks become available when the meter flashes and use the multi-direction plus face-button sequence assigned to that trick; check the paused trick list instead of assuming one universal combination.
