How to Play Top Gun

Quick start

Press START, use SELECT on the missile-selection screen and press START to confirm and take off. In combat, A fires the cannon. Line up an enemy, press B to lock on, then press B again once the sight flashes red to launch a missile. Watch your fuel: from the second combat stage onward, START can call the tanker when supplies run low. During refueling, use the directional pad to align with the hose on the radar, hold A to speed up or B to slow down. The same throttle buttons apply during landing. Follow the approach guidance and aim for an altitude reading of 200 and speed of 288; steer carefully onto the carrier instead of continuing to fire.

Controls

Directional pad: steer and line up targets; up lowers the nose and down raises it. During refueling or landing, use it to align with the fuel line or carrier approach. Combat A: fire cannon. Combat B: lock on; press again after the sight flashes red to fire a missile. Refueling/landing A held: accelerate; B held: decelerate. START: begin and confirm the selected missile; during combat, request a tanker when available, not pause. SELECT: cycle missile choices before takeoff; not used in combat or landing.

Top Gun — About this game

Top Gun puts you in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat for a solo combat campaign. Radar, fuel, altitude and damage displays matter alongside the targets in your sights: surviving the fighting is only part of bringing the aircraft home. The cannon has unlimited ammunition, while missiles must be selected before takeoff and launched after locking onto a target. The missions lead from aerial combat toward attacks on naval and ground forces, with a space base as the ultimate objective. When supplies run low, a tanker rendezvous can replenish both fuel and missiles, but you must align with its fuel line rather than receive supplies automatically. At the end of a stage, the carrier approach demands another change of technique: the weapon buttons become throttle controls, and the altitude and speed instruments guide the landing. Careful adjustments and attention to the radar are more useful than treating every scene as another shooting gallery.
