Press START, set DIFFICULTY to Easy, Medium or Hard, then choose START (Single Player). The campaign contains 12 advanced training missions; the first takes place at the Top Gun base and teaches you to destroy marked ground targets without colliding with obstacles. Follow each briefing and press SELECT whenever you lose the route—the overhead map shows your position, enemies and current objectives. Use B to cycle to the weapon suited to the target and A to fire. Watch the fuel and damage gauges, return to base for fuel or repairs when needed, and finish by landing at the flashing end of the runway. Completing a mission gives a four-picture password; write it down and enter it later through PASSWORDS to resume at the next stage.

The D-Pad controls the aircraft: Left/Right turns, Up engages afterburner, and Down changes altitude for low flight, takeoff and landing. L rolls left and R rolls right. A fires the current weapon and confirms menu choices. B changes weapon, cancels in menus and also changes weapon from the pause screen. SELECT opens the overhead map. START skips an intro screen and pauses or resumes play. Menus use the D-Pad to select an option, A to confirm and B to cancel.
