How to Play Total Recall

Quick start

Press Start and guide Quaid toward the subway. Use Left/Right to move, A to jump, B to punch or fire, Down to crouch, and Up at doors to enter. Search corners for energy canisters, extra lives, and weapons, but avoid Richter instead of trying to defeat him. To change weapons, press Start to pause, tap Left or Right until the desired weapon appears, then press Start again. In the Martian Transit Hub, use Up/Down to drive forward or backward, Left/Right to turn, A to fire, and B to drop mines. After losing a life, press Start to resume.

Controls

On foot: D-pad Left/Right moves; Up enters doors; Down crouches. A jumps. B punches or fires the equipped weapon. Start begins/pauses/resumes; while paused, Left/Right cycles weapons. Select admits Quaid to the next level when available. In the Martian Transit Hub: Up drives forward, Down drives backward, Left/Right executes turns, A fires weapons, and B drops land mines. Walk over weapons, energy canisters, and extra lives to collect them.

Total Recall — About this game

Total Recall is an NES action game based on the science-fiction film. Douglas Quaid fights from downtown streets and subways to flight terminals and the mines of Mars while searching for the truth about his erased identity. On foot, he can punch, jump, crouch, enter doors, and collect handguns, machine guns, or lasers; pausing lets you cycle through available weapons. Each life begins with five energy blocks, which can be restored by hidden canisters, and extra lives reward careful exploration. A driving sequence in the Martian Transit Hub changes the controls and adds forward and reverse movement, turns, gunfire, and land mines while Richter’s car remains an unbeatable threat.
