How to Play Track & Field

Quick start

Use SELECT to choose 1P A for the novice single-player contest, then START. On the event screen, cycle with SELECT and begin with the 100-metre dash. Wait for the start signal before tapping A rapidly; three false starts disqualify you. Next, build speed for the long jump and use the D-pad before the takeoff line. Watch QUALIFY rather than only the opponent: meeting that mark lets you continue.

Controls

A repeatedly: running speed in athletic events. D-pad in any direction: event action, such as hurdle jump, takeoff or javelin release; hold for angle where required. Skeet: D-pad fires left, A fires right. Archery uses A or the D-pad, with hold duration affecting height. SELECT chooses contest and starting event; START begins or pauses/resumes. These are NES controller inputs, not arcade run buttons.

Track & Field — About this game

Track & Field in Barcelona is the European NES edition of Konami's eight-event sports game. The program mixes sprinting, hurdles and jumping with javelin, skeet and archery, so constant button tapping alone will not clear every event. Running speed matters, but takeoff position, release angle and shooting rhythm decide the technical disciplines. Choose a novice or expert contest and a starting event; subsequent events follow in sequence. Each has a qualifying result to meet, and clearing the full circuit brings another round with tougher standards.
