How to Play Ultima: Exodus

Quick start

Press START at the title screen. On a first playthrough, choose REGISTER and create at least four characters, or select READY-MADE to form a party from prepared heroes. Put durable fighters toward the front and keep ranged attackers or spellcasters behind them. Once the journey begins, talk to everyone in the castle and nearby towns, purchase basic equipment and food, then earn gold and experience close to safety before ranging farther afield. Progress is saved by visiting an inn, so return there before and after a long expedition or dungeon trip.

Controls

Controller 1 only. D-pad: move the party on the surface, in towns, castles and combat; choose attack directions and move menu cursors. In a dungeon, Up steps forward, Down steps backward, and Left or Right turns. A: open the command window during play, confirm a highlighted command, and advance dialogue text. B: close the open window or cancel a command; in combat it makes the active character give up both movement and action so the next character takes a turn. SELECT: while the command window is open, scroll to another page of commands. START: start the game.

Ultima: Exodus — About this game

Ultima: Exodus adapts the classic computer role-playing adventure to the NES with a fully menu-driven interface. Create characters by choosing races, professions and ability scores, then assemble four heroes and set out across Britannia. You will question townspeople for clues, buy weapons and food, sail or travel overland, and descend into first-person dungeons. Enemy encounters shift to a grid-based battlefield where party members move and act one at a time with weapons, spells or tools. Success depends on a balanced formation, careful supply and money management, and piecing together the information needed to confront the mysterious machine called Exodus.
