How to Play Wayne Gretzky Hockey

Quick start

Choose One Player and select Practice for a less crowded first game, then set a comfortable speed and short period length. Use the D-pad to skate, and aim with the D-pad while tapping A to pass or shoot. Press SELECT until the teammate you want begins flashing. When an AI teammate has the puck, B asks for a pass, but use it only after moving into open ice. On defense, stay between the puck and your goal; move close to the puck carrier and hold A for a check. At a faceoff, press A as soon as the puck appears.

Controls

Menus: D-pad changes highlighted letters or choices; A selects; B returns to the previous menu or erases a name letter; SELECT moves between menu sections; START advances to the next menu. Match: D-pad skates and sets pass or shot direction. A passes or shoots; press A as the puck appears for a faceoff; hold A near an opponent to check. B demands a pass from an AI teammate. SELECT cycles control until the desired teammate flashes. START pauses and resumes.

Wayne Gretzky Hockey — About this game

Wayne Gretzky Hockey is an overhead NES simulation built around full-rink positioning, passing lanes, checking, penalties, faceoffs, and aimed shots rather than simple arcade scoring. The setup menus let you choose one player, two players, or a computer-only exhibition, then adjust period length, game speed, skill, teams, and player names. A Practice game reduces each side to one forward, two defensemen, and a goalie, making it easier to learn skating and puck movement. During a match you control the flashing skater and can switch teammates manually, demand a pass from an AI teammate, aim passes or shots in any direction, and hold a check near an opponent. Disciplined positioning matters because teammates react less effectively when you abandon your assigned lane or defensive area.
