How to Play Cowboy Kid

Quick start

Choose one or two players with SELECT and press START. Enter the first doorway to receive the knife, then defeat nearby gang members and break chests or barrels for money and items. Buy the key needed to reach the sheriff office and begin the bounty hunt. In town, check open doors for information, healing, equipment, and minigames. A ranged weapon is much safer than the starting knife, so prioritize a bounty where a pistol or musket can be found. Use SELECT to cycle weapons, save food for low health, and buy a map when a town layout becomes confusing.

Controls

Gameplay: D-pad moves Sam or Little Chief; A jumps; B stabs with a knife or fires the selected weapon; SELECT changes weapons; START pauses. Conversations: D-pad moves the selection arrow; A continues or confirms Yes/No; B cancels. Shooting gallery: D-pad moves the target and A or B fires. Blackjack: D-pad changes the wager and selects Hit/Stand, A confirms, B cancels. If carrying a map or ladder, press START and then A to use it.

Cowboy Kid — About this game

The Japanese Famicom release, Western Kids is an overhead Wild West action adventure starring sheriff Sam and, in simultaneous two-player mode, his partner Little Chief. After a short opening in which Sam obtains a knife and becomes sheriff, the wanted screen lets you pursue six Scorpion Gang members in any order before confronting their leader. Towns mix combat with exploration: enemies drop money, barrels and chests hide items, and doorways lead to shops, inns, clues, locked rooms, or blackjack, shooting-gallery, and strength-test minigames. The knife is short ranged, while later pistols, muskets, axes, and boomerangs make dangerous streets easier; found weapons remain available, so choosing a bounty that contains a gun early can greatly improve the next stages. Keys, maps, food, temporary protection, and health upgrades reward careful searching instead of rushing directly toward each boss.
