How to Play Where's Waldo?

Quick start

Use SELECT at the title screen to choose Practice, Easy, Medium, or Hard, then press START. Begin with Practice to learn the cursor size and complete the Train Station, Forest, and Cave without a shared countdown. In picture stages, scan the crowd methodically in rows instead of making random guesses; on Medium and Hard, push the search box toward an edge to reveal the rest of the larger scene. Check body shape and hat as well as stripe color. Wrong guesses subtract time outside Practice, so press A only when the full figure fits. In the cave, watch for brief flashes before selecting; in the subway, plan a route that collects both Waldo and his glasses before exiting.

Controls

Title screen: SELECT cycles the difficulty or Practice setting; START begins. Picture-search stages: D-pad moves the search box and scrolls scenes that are wider than the screen; A checks the selected area for Waldo. Menus and special-stage choices use the D-pad to move and A to confirm. In the Subway stage, B changes available junction paths; use the D-pad to guide the route and collect Waldo and his glasses before reaching the exit.

Where's Waldo? — About this game

Where's Waldo? turns the picture-book search into a timed NES journey toward the launch pad and the Moon. Most stages present a crowded scene in which you move a search box over the image and press A when you believe Waldo is inside it. The route includes the Train Station, Forest, Cave, Fairground, City, Subway, Castle, and Launch Pad, with special challenges breaking up the standard searches: the cave is dark and reveals Waldo only briefly, while the subway becomes a route maze where Waldo and his lost glasses must be collected before reaching the exit. Practice has no overall time limit but stops after the early stages. Easy, Medium, and Hard progressively reduce the total time, enlarge the searchable scenes beyond one screen, increase the penalty for wrong guesses, and may recolor Waldo's familiar striped outfit, making his outline and hat more useful clues than color alone.
