How to Play Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord

Quick start

At the title, use SELECT to choose GAME START and confirm with START or A. SELECT SWITCH opens display settings; Up/Down chooses a setting and Left/Right changes it. Create adventurers in the training grounds, assemble a party at the tavern, and equip them before entering the maze. Move cautiously near the entrance: Up or A advances, but only A opens a door. B opens camp. Resume a suspended dungeon group with RESTART AN “OUT” PARTY at the outskirts.

Controls

Menus: D-pad selects; A confirms. B cancels or selects the menu's bottom command. Dungeon: Up or A moves forward; Left/Right turn, and Down changes facing rather than walking backward. A kicks open doors; B makes camp. START hides/shows the party window, not a pause screen. SELECT opens QUIT, SEARCH, and SET TIMER. At the title, SELECT changes the choice and START/A confirms. Name entry uses the D-pad and A; B deletes and SELECT changes character sets.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord — About this game

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord turns Trebor's castle into a base for repeated dungeon expeditions. Create adventurers with different races, alignments, and professions, then form a party of up to six. The first three members occupy the fighting front line, so order matters alongside equipment and spell choices. Town facilities provide recruitment, shopping, and rest between trips into the first-person maze. Keep track of passages and resources rather than pushing deeper without a route back. A party that quits in the dungeon remains there and must be resumed from the outskirts' restart option. This Japanese Famicom release includes English/Japanese display settings.
