How to Play Xevious: The Avenger

Quick start

Press SELECT on the title screen to choose one or two players, then press START. Move the Solvalou with the D-pad. Use B to fire the Zapper at airborne enemies and A to drop a Blaster bomb on the ground beneath the sight. Only one bomb can be active at a time, so release it when the sight turns red rather than bombing randomly. In the opening areas, prioritise open lanes and survival instead of chasing every aircraft. Watch the sight over empty terrain as well, because a red response can reveal a hidden Sol. Press START to pause and resume.

Controls

D-pad: move the Solvalou forward, backward, left, or right. A: drop one Blaster bomb at the ground position under the targeting sight. B: fire the anti-aircraft Zapper. SELECT: choose one-player or two-player mode on the selection screen. START: begin the game; during play, pause and resume. In two-player mode, players alternate after a fighter is destroyed rather than flying together. The targeting sight flashes red when aligned with a ground target or certain hidden objects.

Xevious: The Avenger — About this game

Xevious is a vertically scrolling shooter in which the Solvalou fighter confronts an invasion force spread across the sky and the landscape below. Its defining idea is a two-level weapon system: the Zapper shoots forward at aircraft, while the Blaster drops one bomb at a time onto the ground position marked by the sight. The sight flashes red when it passes over a valid ground target, rewarding careful observation while enemy fire pressures the player to keep moving. Forest borders divide the route into 16 areas, with enemies ranging from small formations and turrets to the Andor Genesis floating fortress; after the final area, the campaign loops. Hidden Sol towers and Special Flags encourage bombing apparently empty terrain for score and extra ships. The two-player option is alternating, not simultaneous.
