How to Play Yoshi

Quick start

Choose one or two players, set game type, level, speed, and music, then press START. Move Mario left and right and press either A or B to swap the two trays in front of him. Begin by placing identical enemies together, but preserve a bottom eggshell near the base of a column. Stack several characters above it and finish with a top shell to hatch a higher-scoring Yoshi. Down accelerates falling pieces, so use it only after confirming the destination. In B TYPE, reduce the tallest columns first. In versus play, build a large egg to send more extra pieces to the opponent.

Controls

D-pad Left/Right: move Mario. Down: make the falling characters descend faster. A or B: turn Mario and swap the positions of the two adjacent trays in front of him. On menus, Up/Down selects an item and Left/Right changes game type, level, speed, or other settings. SELECT: move the one-player/two-player cursor on the title screen; it is unused during play. START: confirm and begin; during play, pause and resume. One player uses Controller I, while two players use Controllers I and II.

Yoshi — About this game

Yoshi is an action puzzle game built around four vertical trays. Goombas, Piranha Plants, Bloopers, Boos, and two eggshell halves fall from above while Mario moves underneath and swaps each adjacent pair of trays. Two identical enemies disappear when stacked together; mismatched pieces remain and can eventually cross the limit line for a game over. Placing a bottom shell, trapping characters above it, and then landing a top shell hatches a Yoshi, with larger sandwiches earning higher scores. Solo play offers score-focused A TYPE, whose speed rises over time, and stage-based B TYPE, where a preset field must be cleared. The simultaneous two-player mode turns large eggs into attacks that add pieces to the opponent’s field, and the first player to earn three victory eggs wins.
