How to Play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar
Quick start
Create a character, choose a class and enter Hillsfar. Visit your class guild before wandering: accept its first assignment, note the named person or building, and follow that clue. In the city, turn to face an entrance before moving forward. Check the time when a building will not admit you. During horseback travel, jump or duck before the obstacle reaches the rider rather than reacting at the last instant.
Controls
In Hillsfar, the D-Pad first turns the character; press the facing direction again to move. A and B are context-sensitive across menus and action trials. During horseback travel, A jumps and Down ducks under high obstacles. Lock-picking, arena combat and target practice use their own prompts, so read the current screen instead of carrying one A/B mapping from another activity.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar — About this game
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar follows one adventurer through a city controlled by Maalthir and the Red Plumes. After choosing a fighter, thief, cleric or magic-user, the player visits the matching guild, gathers clues and searches Hillsfar and its outskirts for the people and places named in class-specific assignments. The game is unusual for an RPG because much of its challenge comes from real-time activities rather than party combat: horseback obstacle courses connect locations, while locks, mazes, target practice and arena bouts test different skills. Character class changes the available quests and accessible areas, so a single route does not expose every scenario. This record describes the Japanese Famicom release while retaining the verified NES-style control facts shared by the port.
