How to Play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar

Quick start

Choose START, create a character and pick a class. Once inside Hillsfar, go to that class's guild and accept the first assignment. Write down the person or place named in the conversation, then use the city descriptions to find the correct entrance. If it is closed, check the in-game time. On horseback, watch the lane ahead and decide early whether to jump or duck.

Controls

City movement: the D-Pad turns the character; press the facing direction again to step forward. A and B confirm or perform actions according to the current activity. Horseback: A jumps obstacles and Down ducks. The lock-picking, arena and archery sequences have separate context-sensitive controls; follow their prompts. START begins the selected game or character and is used by menus as documented on screen.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar — About this game

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar is a single-character adventure set in a city ruled by Maalthir's Red Plumes. The player creates a fighter, thief, cleric or magic-user, reports to the appropriate guild and follows class-specific assignments by questioning residents and locating buildings in Hillsfar or the surrounding countryside. Rather than relying on conventional turn-based battles, the NES game repeatedly changes form: travel becomes a horseback obstacle course, thieves pick locks, and other tasks use mazes, an archery range or staff fighting in the arena. Buildings operate on a clock and some locations only matter to a particular class, so careful notes and attention to time are as important as reflexes. Battery-backed character storage supports returning to longer quest lines.
