How to Play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance
Quick start
Create a balanced party of up to five characters; a fighter, cleric, thief and magic-user cover the basic jobs. Equip everyone before leaving the civilized block, visit the City Council for your first commission and enter the Slums. Use the Area command to reveal the explored layout, but still inspect walls and doors directly. Save outside combat and return to town to heal, identify valuable loot and train when both experience and 1,000 gold per character are available.
Controls
Use the D-Pad to navigate menus, turn and move in first-person exploration, and position a character on the combat grid. A confirms commands and attacks a chosen target; B cancels and can delay a turn from the main combat menu. SELECT on a targeted enemy displays its name, hit points, armor class and status in the Japanese version. During Auto combat, B can return a character to manual control when pressed on that character's turn.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance — About this game
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance begins when a new band of adventurers arrives in New Phlan to reclaim districts overrun by monsters. The NES version lets the player create up to five controllable characters and add an NPC, equip the party, accept council commissions and explore streets, ruins and wilderness in a first-person view. Encounters shift to an overhead battlefield where movement, facing, weapons, spells, delay and guarding all consume a character's turn. Progress depends on completing fixed battles and missions, identifying useful treasure, resting safely and paying the training hall after earning enough experience. This entry is for the Japanese Famicom release, which preserves Japanese text and includes an enemy-status function documented in its manual.
