How to Play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance

Quick start

Create up to five characters and include a fighter, cleric, thief and magic-user for a practical first party. Equip every character, visit the City Council and accept the opening Slums commission. Use Area to orient yourself, but inspect doors and corridors in person. Save outside combat, rest only where an encounter is unlikely, identify worthwhile treasure and reserve 1,000 gold per character for training after the experience requirement is met.

Controls

The D-Pad navigates menus, turns and moves the party in first-person exploration, and positions characters on the combat grid. A chooses a command or attacks the highlighted target; B cancels and delays the active character from the main combat menu. Combat actions are selected from on-screen menus, including Aim, Cast, Use, Guard and Auto. Save and environment functions are reached through their menu commands rather than a dedicated action button.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance — About this game

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance brings the Gold Box campaign to NES as a long-form party RPG. Up to five player-created adventurers arrive in New Phlan, take commissions from the City Council and push into monster-held districts, ruins and wilderness. Exploration uses a first-person view and menu commands for camping, searching, viewing characters and checking the area map. Battles move to an overhead grid where each character can move, attack, cast, guard, delay or aid a fallen ally according to AD&D rules. Advancement comes mainly from missions and fixed encounters: characters need sufficient experience and must also pay at the training hall. The cartridge stores one battery-backed campaign and places journal information in the game rather than requiring the computer version's external copy-protection materials.
