How to Play Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl!
Quick start
Choose a team and player, then use short passes to pull defenders away before shooting. On offense, move into open space and press A for a shot; press B to pass, or to make the computer teammate pass when you do not hold the ball. On defense, stay between the ball carrier and basket, jump to contest a shot, and punch only when close enough to collect the loose ball. Hold B and press A for a forward lunge when the lane is clear.
Controls
D-Pad moves the active player. Offense: A shoots, or orders the teammate to shoot; B passes, or orders the teammate to pass. Defense: A jumps and B steals or punches. Holding B and pressing A performs a lunging steal. START pauses; the manual labels the center SELECT/START area for pause. Button behavior changes with possession, so use the offense and defense mappings separately.
Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl! — About this game
Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl! converts Midway's rough two-on-two arcade basketball into an NES game built around fast possessions and physical steals. Choose a team and one of eight players, then try to outscore the opposition through passes, jump shots and drives while the computer controls your teammate. Defense has no ordinary foul system: a punch can knock down the ball carrier, and a well-timed jumping block or lunging steal can reverse a possession. Loose objects and fallen players add chaos around the court. The European release retains the NES rule set and short arcade-style matches, making anticipation of passes and recovering the loose ball as important as accurate shooting.
