How to Play Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl!

Quick start

Select a team and player. Move the defense with passes, then shoot with A from an open lane; B passes or calls for a teammate pass. On defense, approach from an angle, use A to jump against shots and B to punch or steal. Collect the loose ball immediately after a hit. For the lunging steal, hold B and press A, but avoid using it when a miss would leave the basket unguarded.

Controls

D-Pad moves the active player. Offense: A shoots or commands the teammate to shoot; B passes or commands the teammate to pass. Defense: A jumps; B steals or punches. Hold B and press A for a lunging steal. START pauses, with the manual referring to the SELECT/START center area for pause. Possession determines which action mapping is active.

Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl! — About this game

Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl! is the North American NES conversion of Midway's deliberately unruly two-on-two basketball game. After selecting a team and one of eight players, the player handles the ball carrier while the console runs the teammate. Passing and shooting follow simple arcade rules, but defense revolves around jumping, punching and knocking the ball loose without conventional fouls. A flying lunge can produce a dramatic steal, though missing leaves the defender out of position. Because a knockdown does not automatically grant possession, reading where the ball will land and recovering it quickly is central to winning each short match.
