How to Play Boulder Dash
Quick start
Look above Rockford before digging any tile and picture where each unsupported boulder will fall. Collect the required quota rather than chasing every diamond, then route to the exit. Hold A or B with a direction to dig, grab one adjacent diamond or push a boulder without stepping into that tile. If trapped with no legal move, hold A+B for over a second to abandon the town at the cost of one Rockford.
Controls
D-pad moves Rockford. Hold A or B while pressing a direction to dig adjacent dirt, collect one adjacent diamond or push a boulder without moving into that space. Hold A+B together for more than one second to escape a trapped town and lose one life. START starts and pauses. SELECT chooses one or two players; D-pad edits the password and A confirms it or selects a town.
Boulder Dash — About this game
The European NES Boulder Dash turns every cave into a moving action puzzle. Rockford removes dirt, gathers a displayed diamond quota and must enter the unlocked exit before time expires. Unsupported boulders obey gravity: they can crush enemies and create diamonds, but can just as easily trap or kill the player. Four selectable towns make up each world, and clearing all four advances the journey. This console version adds an overworld map, six-digit passwords, selectable suit colors and alternating two-player play.
