How to Play Boulder Dash
Quick start
Before moving into dirt, scan the tile above it and leave a horizontal escape. Take the displayed diamond requirement, then head for the exit rather than clearing everything. Hold A or B with a direction to manipulate one adjacent tile without entering it, useful for safe diamond pickup and boulder pushes. If no route remains, hold A+B for over one second to return to the world entrance at the cost of one life.
Controls
D-pad moves Rockford. Hold A or B and press a direction to dig, collect an adjacent diamond or push an adjacent boulder without moving. Hold A+B for more than one second to abandon the current town and lose a life. START starts and pauses. SELECT chooses one or two players. D-pad enters password digits and A confirms the code or selected town.
Boulder Dash — About this game
The Japanese Boulder Dash cartridge is Data East's Famicom version of the classic cave puzzle. Rockford tunnels through dirt and gathers enough diamonds to unlock the exit, while gravity immediately drops unsupported boulders and gems. That falling weight can remove enemies, create routes or crush the player. Four towns make a world and may be attempted from the map; all must be cleared to continue. Six-digit passwords preserve world progress, and the cartridge includes character-color choice and alternating two-player play.
