How to Play Flight of the Intruder
Quick start
At the map, choose an available waypoint with Select and press A or Start. For takeoff, hold Left until thrust reaches 100%, then retract the landing gear with B and hook with A. In the cockpit, steer with the D-pad, hold B plus Up/Down to adjust thrust, use Select to switch guns and missiles, and press A to fire. Learn carrier recovery early: lower gear and hook, approach near 50% thrust, and keep vertical velocity under 10 at touchdown.
Controls
D-pad: dive with Up, climb with Down, bank left/right; on takeoff/landing Left raises thrust and Right lowers it. A: start waypoint/fire cockpit weapon or rockets/toggle arrestor hook. B: fire bombs or radar missiles; hold with Up/Down for cockpit thrust; toggle landing gear. Select: choose/skip waypoint or switch weapons. Start: start waypoint/pause.
Flight of the Intruder — About this game
Phantom Air Mission is the European title for the NES version of Flight of the Intruder. Across twelve escalating missions set during the 1972 Linebacker campaign, the player launches from USS Constellation, fights MiG-21s in an F-4 Phantom, attacks ground and sea targets in an A-6 Intruder, and returns for a demanding carrier landing. Waypoints divide each operation into air combat, bombing, strafing, takeoff, and recovery segments, with different weapons and controls on each screen. This entry retains the European cartridge title.
