How to Play Ghosts 'n Goblins
Quick start
Choose the one-player game with SELECT and press START. Keep the starting lance while learning the cemetery: clear the ground ahead, wait for an opening and only then commit to a jump, because Arthur cannot steer himself back in midair. Fire from standing, crouching or jumping height as the enemy pattern demands. Leave an unwanted weapon on the ground instead of replacing a reliable lance or dagger. Later, secure the shield/cross before the route to the last gate; reaching that approach without it sends Arthur back. Completing the first quest is only the midpoint, so preserve the same careful rhythm on the harder second run.
Controls
D-pad Left/Right runs; Up/Down climbs ladders; Down crouches on the ground. A jumps, with Left or Right setting the jump direction before takeoff. B throws the equipped weapon, including while crouching or in the air. SELECT moves the title-screen marker between the one-player and two-player modes and does nothing during action. START begins the chosen game and toggles pause during play.
Ghosts 'n Goblins — About this game
Ghosts 'n Goblins on US NES casts Arthur as a lone knight crossing six stages and seven guarded gates to recover Princess Prin-Prin from the Demon Realm. The route combines graveyards, forests, ladders, moving platforms, aggressive undead and stage bosses. Armour absorbs one hit before Arthur is left exposed; the next hit, a pit or an empty timer takes a life. Jar-carrying enemies can reveal one of several throwable weapons, and each pickup replaces the current one. The Famicom/NES conversion also expects the shield, called the cross in the Japanese version, for the final approach and sends Arthur through a harder second quest before the true rescue is complete.
