How to Play Gun-Nac

Quick start

Start on Novice or Intermediate and set ship speed with SELECT; speed 2 is a comfortable baseline, while 1 helps thread dense patterns and 3 or 4 crosses danger quickly. Hold B for the main weapon and save A bombs for crowded waves or bosses. Commit to one weapon number and one bomb letter long enough to build their levels instead of swapping every pickup. Buy a Wing early so the weapon can exceed level 3, then spend shop money on the weapon you already use and practical bomb stock. If hit while small, remember that part of your cash value is lost, so survival is worth more than a risky money bag.

Controls

D-pad: move the ship in eight directions and navigate title or Supply Shop choices. SELECT: cycle ship speed from 1, the slowest, through 4, the fastest. A: use the currently equipped bomb; confirm a purchase in the Supply Shop. B: fire the current main weapon; cancel a shop selection. START: begin the game, pause or resume during play, and confirm an option on the Continue screen. On the title screen, select CONFIG.SYS with the D-pad to set difficulty, ricochet, area display, sound check, and sprite priority.

Gun-Nac — About this game

Gun-Nac is Compile's single-player vertical shooter for the NES, sending Commander Gun-Nac through eight artificial planets filled with animated rabbits, household objects, machines, and oversized bosses. The ship carries five unlimited-ammo main weapons and four limited bomb types. Collecting the same numbered weapon or lettered bomb consecutively raises its level, while switching types resets the new selection to its starting power. A Wing enlarges the ship, protects it from a hit, and allows main weapons to grow beyond their normal level-three cap. Money bags fund weapons, firepower, Wings, and bomb deliveries in the Supply Shop after most stages. CONFIG.SYS also offers four difficulty levels, optional ricochet, sound check, and sprite-priority settings. The US release replaces some Japanese stage-two cigarette and match enemies with missiles and suitcases and alters other graphics.
