How to Play Hatris
Quick start
Press Start for normal speed, choose Shop 0 and Stage 0 with the D-pad and A, leave music as desired, then press Start. Move each falling pair left or right, press A when its two hats should trade sides, and use Down only after deciding where both will land. Build clean vertical groups of one type; five matching hats in a row are sold. Keep the middle columns lower because new pairs enter above them, and use the outer columns for taller, controlled stacks. Watch the next-pair window and the HATS counter. Save at least one helper for a genuinely blocked position: B starts Overtime, the D-pad selects a pile, and A performs the helper's action. Press B again if you want to stop early.
Controls
D-pad: choose menu options; during play, move the falling pair left or right and press Down to drop it toward the stacks. A: confirm menu choices and swap the left/right positions of the falling hats; during Overtime, perform the active helper's action. B: cancel or return in menus; during play, start Overtime with the newest stored helper, and press again to end it early. Start: open the game menu from the title screen, begin after setup, and pause or resume play. Select: not used. Title shortcut: hold Down and press Start for Turbo speed. In Overtime, Alexey removes a bottom hat with each A press, up to five; Vladimir uses A to pick up one pile and A again beside another to swap them.
Hatris — About this game
Hatris is the 1992 North American NES edition of Alexey Pajitnov and Vladimir Pokhilko's single-player falling-pair puzzle. Two hats descend together over six mannequin heads; A reverses the pair, and matching shapes nest at different heights, so careless mixing wastes vertical space. Five consecutive hats of one type are sold for cash, while at least fifteen sales clear a stage. The cartridge contains six Shops with ten Stages each: later Stages fall faster, and higher Shops begin with more hats already stacked. Repeated sales earn Helper icons. In Overtime, Alexey can pull up to five bottom hats away, while Vladimir exchanges two complete piles. This helper system and the Hatris double-sale bonus distinguish the US NES version from the earlier Famicom release and from ports that use flames.
