How to Play Hostages

Quick start

Start with the lowest difficulty and TRAINING, then confirm the briefing and first operative with A. Use doorways and walls to hide from searchlights and follow the map to an X-marked sniper position. After deployment, use a sniper to cover the entry side. Lower an assault member with short Down presses, stopping with Up; at a clear window use A+Right as indicated in the Japanese manual to enter. Inside, follow the floor map and distinguish captives from enemies.

Controls

START begins; D-pad selects and A confirms. Street: Left/Right moves, Up hides or enters a post, Down leaves cover or lies prone, Down+Right rolls; A/B checks the map from cover. Sniper: D-pad aims, A fires, SELECT returns to the operation map. Rappel: Down descends, Up stops; the Japanese manual specifies A+Right to break into a window. Indoors, Direct mode uses map directions: press a direction to face it, then again to advance. Rotate mode uses facing-relative directions with Up forward. A fires; hold A with the D-pad to aim.

Hostages — About this game

Hostages turns one hostage crisis into several connected kinds of play. First, three snipers must reach marked positions outside the embassy without being caught in the moving searchlights. Their surviving positions determine which sides of the building you can cover. You then watch windows through a scope, reducing the danger before lowering the assault team from the roof. Rappelling demands short, controlled movements: dropping too far can cost an operative before he even reaches a room. Inside, the view changes to first person and the floor map helps you locate enemies and captives. The challenge is to coordinate these stages within the mission's time limit, not to rush in firing at every figure.
