How to Play Karnov

Quick start

Press START and begin by shooting with B while using A to cross the first platforms. Collect the early orb and ladder. Use the ladder beneath a high pickup, checking its icon before pressing SELECT. If movement keeps changing the item you want, the player's guide recommends pausing with START to set the cursor, then resuming without extra movement before using it. At Game Over, move the cursor to CONTINUE and press SELECT.

Controls

The directional pad moves Karnov, and left/right also selects inventory options. A jumps. B shoots, or throws an equipped boomerang. SELECT uses the selected option. START begins play and toggles pause. On the US Game Over menu, choose CONTINUE with the directional pad and confirm with SELECT.

Karnov — About this game

The American manual casts Karnov as a former circus strongman called upon to recover Creamina's Treasure of Babylon from the dragon Ryu. This is the NES treasure-hunting version, rather than the Japanese edition's mission from a god. Nine stages mix platforming with swimming and flying sections, and your inventory is just as important as your fireballs. Ladders provide access to high items, bombs break certain barriers and wings open aerial routes. Taking a hit turns Karnov blue; another hit in that state costs a life, while a power-up orb can restore him. Movement also shifts the inventory cursor, so carefully selecting a tool is part of the challenge.
