How to Play Castelian

Quick start

Choose a one-player NOVICE game for your first attempt. Select brings up the title-screen options; move the marker with Up/Down and change a setting with Select, then press Start. Watch the opening ledges rather than walking straight towards the edge. Fire from a standstill with A; when you need to clear a gap, keep walking left or right and press A. Use Up to take a lift or enter a door.

Controls

Walk with Left/Right. Press A whilst standing still to fire, or whilst walking in either direction to jump. Up is used for doorways and ascending lifts; Down sends a lift down. Start pauses and releases pause. Before a game, Select opens the options, Up/Down move the marker and Select alters the setting. There is no separate B-button attack.

Castelian — About this game

In this European edition, the challenge is finding a climbable route rather than clearing a scrolling stage. The NES version of Castelian keeps the climber visible as the tower turns behind him, making each new section part of a three-dimensional-looking puzzle. Getting to the top means learning which ledges will hold, when to use a lift, and where a doorway leads. A hit may undo several floors of progress, while falling into the sea ends a life. Shooting helps against some obstacles but does nothing to others. Rather than rushing every enemy, the useful skill is recognising when to stop, fire, jump, or retreat through a door.
