How to Play Maniac Mansion
Quick start
On the team-selection screen, point at two friends and press A on each; select a portrait again to remove it. Dave stays in the team. Move the pointer to the on-screen START option and press A. At the mansion, hold B and move the pointer around the entrance to identify objects. Experiment with the listed commands to find the front-door key. Once collected, choose つかう (use), the key, and the door, confirming with A. Select なかま to change the active teammate. Before stopping, use SELECT to display and record the password; choose PASSWORD when resuming.
Controls
Control Pad: move the cursor, not the teenager directly. A: confirm choices, execute a command, or advance cutscene text. Hold B: identify the object under the cursor. SELECT: show the password screen. START: pause. Use いく to direct movement, なかま to switch the controlled character, とる to collect an object, わたす to hand something over, and つかう to use an item. Select the command and its object or target with A. These controls are for the Japanese Famicom release, not the overseas NES game.
Maniac Mansion — About this game
This Japanese Famicom adaptation gives the mansion its own visual presentation and interface, rather than using the later overseas NES conversion. You control Dave and two chosen friends, giving one teenager at a time instructions through a list of actions and objects. Their different strengths encourage cooperation: a task that defeats one member may be possible for another, and an object found in one room may matter somewhere else. Hold B while moving the pointer to identify things worth investigating, then build an instruction with the appropriate command. The Japanese dialogue and command names belong to the original cartridge; this is not an English translation patch. Progress is resumed with a password, accessed with SELECT, while START pauses play.
