How to Play NES Open Tournament Golf
Quick start
Select STROKE PLAY with Up/Down and A, choose one player, and pick a course. On the overhead view, aim with Left/Right and use Up/Down followed by A to set swing speed, club, and spin. Try SLOW while learning. Press A to start the backswing, again at the power you want, and a third time when the marker returns to the straight-shot zone. Favor the fairway over risky shortcuts. On the green, read the grass markings, aim, and press A twice to choose putting distance. SELECT opens course information and other options; START brings up the interruption/save prompt.
Controls
Control Pad Up/Down: choose menu entries and shot settings. Left/Right: aim. A: confirm; press three times for a normal shot—backswing, power, impact—or twice for a putt—backswing, distance. B: cancel or move back one setup stage; at swing-speed selection, display the ball's lie. SELECT: open options, including scorecard, green view, course view, and replay. START during play: interrupt and save the round. These are the overseas NES controls; the Japanese game opens its information menu differently.
NES Open Tournament Golf — About this game
NES Open Tournament Golf combines course planning with a timing-based swing. An overhead view lets you inspect hazards and choose your club, direction, swing speed, and spin before the action moves behind the golfer. Three A-button presses determine the start, strength, and impact of a normal shot; putting instead needs two. Wind, rough, bunkers, and the grain of the green make club distances a starting point rather than a guarantee. The overseas release offers US, Japan, and UK courses, alongside Stroke Play, hole-by-hole matches, and tournaments with prize money. Improve Mario's results, review your statistics in the Clubhouse, or bring in a second player as Luigi. It is not the Japanese edition's five-course unlocking challenge.
