How to Play NES Open Tournament Golf
Quick start
Use Up or Down and A to choose Stroke Play, select one player, and begin on the Japan course. Aim with Left or Right and choose swing speed, club, and spin with Up or Down, confirming each with A. SLOW gives you more time to control the swing. On the shot screen, press A to begin, again to set power, then once more as the marker returns to the straight-shot zone. Keep the ball on the fairway while learning the meter. On the green, aim first and press A twice to set putting distance. Finish the course within its scoring allowance to open the next one.
Controls
Up/Down: menu choices and swing-speed, club, or spin settings. Left/Right: aim the shot or putt. A: confirm settings; for a normal shot, press three times to start the backswing, set power, and set impact; for a putt, press twice to start and set distance. B: return to the previous setting; from swing-speed selection, open the information/options screen. START during a one-player round: bring up the interrupt/save prompt. The Japanese edition does not use the overseas SELECT shortcut for its options screen.
NES Open Tournament Golf — About this game
Mario Open Golf's Japanese release turns a round of golf into a course-clearing challenge. Japan is the starting course; successful rounds open further destinations, including Australia, France, Hawaii, and the UK. Each has an over-par limit, so keeping a round under control matters more than simply attempting the longest drive. Before swinging, choose the club, swing speed, spin, and direction on the overhead course view. A separate shot screen tests your timing for power and accuracy, while putting uses its own two-press rhythm. Match Play offers computer opponents of different strengths, and the Club House provides practice on holes you have reached. This version does not include the overseas NES game's Tournament mode.
