R-Type puts a small spacecraft against enemies and machinery that occupy much of its scrolling battlefield. Survival depends on finding room to move while choosing between quick shots and a slower, charged laser. Collecting upgrades introduces the Droid, a combat unit that can attach to the front or rear of the R-9, intercept some enemy fire, or fight separately. Its position changes which approaches are protected and where its weapons reach. Different laser pickups reward different routes through narrow passages, while exposed boss weak points call for careful timing. Learning the terrain matters as much as firing quickly: an upgrade is useful only if you can reach it without losing your ship.
