How to Play Mother

Quick start

Press START, choose an empty ゲームをはじめる slot and confirm with A. Enter the characters’ names and favourite food, confirm the settings and choose message speed. Fight the lamp while leaving your room, defeat the doll in your sister’s room and CHECK it afterward for the first melody. Talk to your mother and answer Dad’s call with TALK. Outside, CHECK the dog for the basement key. Open the basement, collect the diary and bat, and use the bat from Goods to equip it. Call Dad again to record your progress.

Controls

D-Pad moves in eight directions and selects. A opens commands and confirms; B cancels or opens status in the field. START starts the game; SELECT has no assigned function. Use the map item through Goods after obtaining it. B does not run in this Japanese original.

Mother — About this game

Household objects suddenly attack a boy and his sisters, beginning a journey through ordinary towns and places that refuse to behave normally. Ninten follows clues about his great-grandfather’s research, meets companions with different talents and gathers fragments of a melody. Conversations, curious objects and routes between settlements matter as much as winning battles. A baseball bat or a useful everyday item can be more relevant than a fantasy sword.

Random encounters use commands for fighting, PSI, goods, defence and escape. Psychic abilities spend PP, so healing every small injury can leave the party short during a longer outing. Equipment must be used from the inventory to become active. Each character has limited carrying space; storing unneeded belongings with a sister makes room for food and quest items. Money earned through battles goes into a bank account and must be withdrawn using the Cash Card. Call Dad on a telephone and explicitly record the journey to save; a chat or a recent victory alone is not a substitute for saving. Returning home also provides recovery before exploring unfamiliar roads.

This is the official Virtual Console edition. In-game telephone records and host suspend/backup features are separate; the NES guide describes the former.
