How to Play Ultima: Quest of the Avatar
Quick start
Press START, choose New Game with A and select one of three slots. Set text speed—9 is fastest—then enter a name and finish with END. Answer Hawkwind’s choices with the D-Pad and A; they decide your profession. Read Lord British’s briefing, then leave for the town associated with that class. Talk to residents, inspect equipment through OTHER→READY and make an early INN save by accepting the offer to record your journey. Resume via Play Game.
Controls
D-Pad moves and selects. A opens the command window, confirms and advances dialogue; B cancels. START opens the title choices; SELECT has no regular play function. TALK speaks to an adjacent person, SEARCH checks beneath the leader, and OTHER→READY equips weapons and armor. In combat select ATTACK, CAST, USE or MOVE with the D-Pad and A; ranged attacks use a target box. To retreat, move each member off a battlefield edge; this can reduce virtue.
Ultima: Quest of the Avatar — About this game
Your goal is to become a living example of eight virtues and reach the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom. Hawkwind’s opening questions determine one of eight professions and the town associated with your hero. You begin alone, then meet potential companions across Britannia; the active NES party holds the hero and three allies. Each profession brings different equipment and magical ability, so recruiting changes how you approach the next journey.
Conversations lead toward runes, shrines, stones and the artifacts needed for the final expedition. Honesty, compassion and other virtues depend on actions, including how you deal with merchants and people in need. Battles use a separate tactical field with movement, attacks, magic and an optional automatic command. Spells consume MP and ingredients, making herbs as important as weapons when preparing to leave town. Surface exploration gives way to first-person underground corridors. Inns recover some HP and MP and offer explicit saving on the original cartridge; choose to record the journey rather than assuming every overnight stay saves.
