How to Play Othello
Quick start
Press START at the title screen. Use the D-pad and A to choose YOU BLACK, YOU WHITE or 2PLAYERS. Set the computer level and time as applicable, then enter a name of up to six characters; choose END with A for a shorter name. On the board, move the hand to a legal square and press A.
Controls
D-pad: menu and hand cursor. A: confirm, place a disc or acknowledge a forced pass. B: request a takeback on your turn; in two-player mode, the opponent selects YES and presses B to agree. START: begin from title or advance after the game. Takebacks: unlimited at level 1, three at 2/3, none at 4.
Othello — About this game
This Japanese Othello adaptation turns a compact board into a changing tactical puzzle. A legal move must trap opposing discs in a straight horizontal, vertical or diagonal line, with every trapped disc turning to your colour. Black starts, but the leader in the opening is not necessarily the winner. Four computer levels and adjustable thinking time offer different ways to practise, while two-player matches add negotiated takebacks. The highest level removes takebacks; running out of allotted thinking time loses the game even if you have more discs.
