How to Play Othello
Quick start
Press START to begin. Move the menu arrow with the D-pad and confirm opponent, level and time choices with START. Enter up to six name characters with A; select END to finish early, or B to erase. Move the hand to a square that traps at least one opposing disc and press A to play.
Controls
D-pad: menus and board cursor. START: begin, confirm setup choices or show the result after play. A: enter letters, place discs, acknowledge a forced pass or accept a two-player takeback choice. B: erase a name letter or request a takeback on your turn. Level 1 allows unlimited takebacks, levels 2/3 three, level 4 none.
Othello — About this game
Othello rewards a strong final position rather than a big early lead. Place a disc to trap an unbroken line of your opponent’s pieces, then watch them turn to your colour. This NES version offers four computer levels, a choice of playing black or white, and timed or untimed games where permitted. Takebacks help on the easier levels, but level four allows none. A second player can join for head-to-head play, with takebacks requiring their approval. Watch your clock as well as the corners: a timeout loses regardless of the disc count.
