How to Play R-Type III: The Third Lightning
Quick start
Start a new game and choose one of the three Force devices: Round, Shadow or Cyclone, each with its own weapon behavior. In Stage 1, stay back until you learn the enemy pattern, destroy POW armor for Force crystals and other upgrades, then attach the Force to the front as a shield or launch it to attack from a safer angle. Hold the shot input shown by the game to charge the Wave Cannon. The GBA port has six stages and a password system, so record the five-character password after a cleared stage before leaving.
Controls
D-pad: move the R-9Ø2 and navigate menus. L: launch the Force when attached or call it back when detached; it may dock at the front or rear depending on position. Hold the game's displayed Shot input to charge the Wave Cannon, and use rapid fire and Beam/Hyper switching as shown on the control legend. Accessible GBA sources do not unambiguously identify the A/B/R/START assignments, and this port removed the SNES remapping menu, so those buttons are not guessed from the SNES manual.
