How to Play Side Pocket

Quick start

Use SELECT on the title screen to choose Training, then press START. Pick Lesson with the Control Pad and A, choose a shot type and watch the demonstration. Aim with the Control Pad, press A once to start the power meter and press it again at the strength you want. Hold B and use the Control Pad to change the cue-ball contact point. Try the same shot with different contact points before moving on to the one-player Pocket Game. SELECT leaves the lesson for the title screen.

Controls

Control Pad: aim and choose training options. A: start the power meter, then press again to shoot at the selected strength; also confirms training choices. B: toggle target-ball numbers. Hold B with the Control Pad to choose the cue-ball contact point. SELECT: change title-screen game modes or leave a training lesson. START: begin the selected game. These are NES/Famicom inputs, not the different shooting buttons used by the SNES conversion.

Side Pocket — About this game

Side Pocket turns a small set of controls into a game of planning and precision. Aim with the direction line, start the power meter and stop it when you are ready to shoot. Changing the cue-ball contact point affects what happens after impact, letting you set up a follow shot, draw back or use the cushions for a better angle. In the one-player Pocket Game, clearing a table is only part of the challenge: you need enough points and must tackle trick shots to advance. Consecutive pots and numerical order help build your score, while misses and fouls threaten your remaining chances. Training offers computer demonstrations and practice before you commit to a championship run. Two players can instead compare totals over five Pocket Game sets or play 9 Ball, making this as much a game of position as a race to sink the next ball.
