How to Play Slalom

Quick start

Use SELECT to choose one or two players, use the D-pad to choose Snowy Hill, Steep Peak, or Mt. Nasty, then press START. Hold Up on open stretches to tuck and gain speed. Steer with Left and Right, but release Up and tap or hold Down before dense obstacles when you need room to correct your line. Build speed before a ramp to jump; while airborne, hold Down briefly for freestyle points and release it before landing. Avoid snow lumps, snowmen, sledders, trees, and other skiers because a fall costs valuable time. Start on Snowy Hill before moving to the faster courses.

Controls

D-pad Left/Right: steer. Up: tuck to ski faster. Down: snowplow and brake while on the snow; hold while airborne to perform freestyle, then release before landing. A+B together: jump. SELECT: move the skier icon and choose one- or two-player mode on the menu; during the demonstration it returns to the menu. START: confirm the selected mountain and begin; pause or resume during a run; during the demonstration it returns to the menu. Player 1 uses Controller 1, and the second player uses Controller 2.

Slalom — About this game

Slalom is Rare’s downhill skiing game for the NES. One or two players choose Snowy Hill, Steep Peak, or the expert Mt. Nasty, each contributing eight timed runs for a total of 24. The skier must thread through gates while avoiding trees, snowmen, sledders, rival skiers, and rough snow that steals speed. Holding Up tucks for acceleration, while Down applies a snowplow brake on the ground and performs freestyle in the air. Ramps allow automatic jumps when enough momentum has been built, and successful tricks add bonus points. Finishing with time remaining and scoring well opens stretches with fewer rival skiers, so clean lines and controlled speed matter more than simply steering downhill at full pace.
