Choose STORY MODE and begin Sonic's episode, the only character chapter available at first. On the world map, move to the event marker and press A; hold B to move the map icon faster. Take Emerl north towards Tails' House, where the first real fight is Sonic and Emerl versus Shadow in a three-life Survival battle. At the start of each life, assign the three special types to Ground, Air and Guard. Use this forgiving fight to learn A jumps, a three-hit B combo and tap-L guarding. Only hold L to recover HP when Shadow is safely out of range, because healing leaves you open. Build your fundamentals before relying on R specials; Emerl will copy skills and gain more customisation options as the story advances.

Control Pad moves in eight directions; tap a direction twice to dash. A jumps; press A again in mid-air for the airborne jump. B performs a light attack; three presses form a combo. Direction plus B performs a Heavy or Upper Attack, jumping plus B an Air Attack, and dashing plus B a Dash Attack. Tap L to guard, hold L to recover HP, or tap L twice to rotate the arena 180 degrees. R uses the selected special, with different Ground and Air assignments. START pauses. In menus and on the world map, use the Control Pad, A to enter, and B to cancel or speed map movement.
