Select "STORY MODE" in mode selection to start the first available Sonic episode. On the world map, move the cursor to the event mark, press A to enter, and hold B to move the icon faster. When you take Emerl with you to Tails House on the north side, the first actual battle will be a survival battle between Sonic and Emerl vs. Shadow and Life 3. At the start of each life, three types of special moves are assigned to ground, air, and guard. First, try A's jump, B's combo, and L's guard, and only when your opponent moves away, press and hold L to recover. Shadow battles are for practice, so it's better to memorize B's basic combos and defense distances than to repeat special moves.

Cross button: Move in 8 directions. Enter any direction twice: Dash. A: Jump, press again in the air to air jump. B: Normal attack, combo in 3 hits. Direction + B: Strong attack/launch attack. Jumping B: Air attack. Dashing B: Dash attack. L: Guard, press and hold to recover HP, press twice to rotate the map 180 degrees. R: Selected special move (separate settings for ground and air). START: Pause. In the menu/world map, use the cross button to select, confirm A, cancel B, and accelerate map movement.
