Select "Super Mario Bros. 3" from the title screen, select the file, and start with "Mario" or "Mario & Luigi." Move to 1-1 on the World 1 map, enter the course with the A button, and aim for the goal panel. Run while holding B or R, and when the power meter is full with Tail Mario, press A repeatedly to fly. Before starting a difficult course, it's a good idea to open the item window by pressing L on the map.

Select the menu with the cross button, confirm with A, return with B, and start/pause with START. In the course, you move using the cross button, and at the top you can enter doors and upward clay pipes, and at the bottom you can crouch, slide down hills, and enter downward clay pipes. A is jumping/swimming, B is dashing, holding/throwing things, tail attack, fireball, and R is the same as B. Press B/R to run and fill up the power meter, then press A repeatedly with Tail/Raccoon Mario to fly. Tanuki Mario becomes Jizo with Down+B. On the map, use the cross button to move, A to enter the course/use the selected item, L to open the item window, and SELECT to open replay data.
