Press Start at the title screen, choose New Game, select Hero or Heroine, then name both characters. The Hero begins in Granz Castle's cell: speak to Willy, Amanda, the slave by the door, Amanda twice more, then the slave; defeat the Jackal in the arena with A-button attacks and leave north. After Niccolo rescues you, go south, defeat the Chobin Hood, find the lost book in the meadow and follow the path to Topple. The Heroine begins at Cascade Cottage: equip Wisp, save at the Silver Goddess Statue, follow the east–south–west route to Topple, then leave by the south exit to search for the boy's book. Silver statues save; gold statues also restore the party.

Control Pad: move the character or cursor; rotate and change levels in the Ring Menu. A: attack, talk, examine, open chests and confirm; continue an attack with A for a combo, or hold A until charged and release for a Deathblow. B: hold to run; cancel or go back in menus. L: jump after the ability is learned; L+A sits and gradually restores MP. R: use the equipped Spirit's magic. Select: switch the controlled partner in battle, or show menu help. Start: open the Ring Menu; press Start again there to return to play. In the Ring Menu, L opens weapons and R opens Spirits during battle.
