Press START on the title screen, select "New Game", enter Alphonse's name and birthday, and answer the opening question. Depending on your answer, your initial abilities, allies you join, and belongings will change. The first battle on Loutra Island is a tutorial in which you control only Alphonse, and the victory condition is the defeat of the enemy leader. Press A to decide Alphonse's destination, attack or standby, and leave the accompanying Rhodes soldiers to the guests. Check the accuracy and damage before deciding, and if you have time, attack the bandit leader and earn experience points. After the battle, press R on the world map, save from the system menu, and proceed to Port Skabelum.

Move the map and menu cursor with the D-pad. Press A to decide, send conversation, and select units, destinations, and commands. Press B to cancel/go back one step. R opens the command menu on the world map and the battle menu during battle, and is used to check victory conditions and end the phase. L is a situational shortcut; during battle, use A/B to switch between units, and remove equipment from the equipment screen. START saves during battle, and ability display can be switched on the equipment screen. SELECT displays help/information for the selected object. On the world map, press R to enter organization, training, shop, and system.
