After choosing a language, press START at the title and select New Game; use Password only to continue from a five-character room code. The introduction takes you into Room 1, the Kitchen. Follow the pieces of cheese and stop to read every on-screen instruction before acting: the first room introduces the context-sensitive challenges while Tom tries to recover the cheese. Finish each short task to progress across the house map; later passwords resume at checkpoints in the Kitchen, Living Room, Game Room, Bedroom, Back Yard or Dining Room. Pay attention to each prompt, because the required buttons and objective change between mini-games.

Use the D-Pad to move Jerry and to choose menu or password characters. During play, B is generally the immediate jump or object-attack button, but its precise function changes with the mini-game. A, L and R provide the other context-sensitive actions printed on the instruction screen for that challenge; chase, throwing and balancing scenes do not all share one layout. START pauses play. On menu and password screens, use the button icons displayed by the game to accept or return. Read the instruction card before every new task rather than relying on a fixed attack scheme.
